Cars go on Gogoshima’s two routes, from Takahama Port to Tomari Port and Yura Port

The ships that take a car across to Gogoshima are run from Takahama Port by Gogoshima Co., Ltd. There are two ports on the island: Tomari Port in the south and Yura Port in the north. Gogoshima’s “Boarding guide” writes this for people going by car.

Translation: “Boarding tickets are sold on the ship. Please board directly. If you board with a car, please line up from lane 1. … By car: vehicles can also board. The port also has paid parking. From Matsuyama IC on the Matsuyama Expressway: about 35 minutes. From Matsuyama Airport: about 20 minutes.”

There are two ships that carry cars: “Misora” (ミソラ) arrives at Yura Port and “Shitorasu” (しとらす) arrives at Tomari Port. Each can carry 14 vehicles (Gogoshima, “Introduction of the ships”).

The crossing by car to Nakajima (Kutsuna Islands) is from Mitsuhama Port, not Takahama Port. That is in From Mitsuhama Port to Nakajima.

The travel time is written the opposite way for Tomari and Yura by the ferry company and the prefecture

Ehime Prefecture, “Access from within Matsuyama City” (updated November 14, 2023) 15 minutes 10 minutes
Satojima Meguri Liaison Council, “Gogoshima” 15 minutes 10 minutes

The three pages do not say which is the present travel time. This article uses the numbers of Gogoshima, which runs the ships, for the points.

Times

These are the times for the four directions, taken from Gogoshima’s timetable.

Direction Times (14 sailings)
Takahama Port to Tomari Port (Shitorasu) 6:45, 7:17, 7:52, 9:25, 10:25, 11:25, 12:25, 13:55, 15:25, 16:40, 17:40, 18:40, 19:40, 20:25
Takahama Port to Yura Port (Misora) 6:15, 7:25, 8:08, 8:55, 9:55, 10:55, 11:55, 13:15, 14:40, 16:00, 17:10, 18:10, 19:10, 20:10
Tomari Port to Takahama Port 6:25, 7:00, 7:35, 8:55, 10:05, 11:05, 12:10, 13:35, 15:00, 16:10, 17:20, 18:20, 19:20, 20:10
Yura Port to Takahama Port 5:55, 7:08, 7:44, 8:35, 9:35, 10:35, 11:35, 12:55, 14:20, 15:35, 16:40, 17:50, 18:50, 19:50

The timetable has the following notes.

Translation: “★ From the third Sunday of July to the third Sunday of August, the ship calls at Funakoshi Port before reaching its destination. ◆ The ship does not run from December 31 to January 3.”

In Gogoshima’s timetable, the ◆ mark is placed before the times of the last sailing of each route, four in all (20:10 to Yura and 20:25 to Tomari from Takahama, 19:50 from Yura, and 20:10 from Tomari). The timetable of Ehime Prefecture’s “Charms of the islands: Gogoshima” also marks the same four sailings with ◆ and writes “◆ does not run in the period from December 31 to January 3”. The sailings that do not run from December 31 to January 3 are these last sailings with the ◆ mark.

The ★ mark is on the 9:55 to Yura and the 15:25 to Tomari from Takahama. If you cross at the turn of the year, ask Gogoshima (089-961-2034).

The fare for a car is decided by length, and includes one driver

Length of vehicle One way
Under 3 m 1,280 yen
3 m to under 4 m 1,580 yen
4 m to under 5 m 1,890 yen
5 m to under 6 m 2,460 yen

Translation: “The driver is included in the vehicle fare. Vehicles with a long overall length or a low ride height may be refused boarding. … We may ask you to show the vehicle inspection certificate.”

For passengers, one way is 300 yen for adults and 150 yen for children. The fare table page does not give the date it applies from, but Gogoshima’s “Notice of ferry fare revision” (dated March 31, 2025) writes that the revision takes effect on May 1, Reiwa 7 (2025). The amounts in the fee table dated “May 1, Reiwa 7” on the linked page are the same as the fare table.

A table that lines up the number of sailings and the fares with other routes is in Car ferries and island routes, number of sailings and fares.

There is a ticket machine in the waiting room at Takahama Port. Gogoshima’s notice dated January 1, 2026 says it supports cash and cashless payment, and that commuter passes and coupon tickets are not sold at the machine. You can also buy a ticket on the ship. Gogoshima also has an advance payment application page for credit cards only. It does not say that this reserves a seat or a space for a car.

From October 14 to 20, the ferry Shitorasu is in dock and there is a temporary schedule

Gogoshima announced, dated September 28, 2026, that the ferry “Shitorasu” will go into dock.

Translation: “The ferry ‘Shitorasu’ will go into dock in the period below. Dock period: Reiwa 8 (2026), October 14 to 20. During the period above, because the ferry ‘Shitorasu’ is in dock, we will run on a temporary schedule. … The ferry between Gogoshima and Takahama will be run only by the ferry ‘Misora’. A shuttle bus will run between Yura Port and Tomari Port, so please use it. (The bus is free.)”

In the temporary schedule PDF attached to the notice (we read it as an image), the sailings during the period are as follows.

Direction Times
Takahama Port to Yura Port (3 sailings) 12:25, 16:25, 20:25
Takahama Port to Tomari Port (15 sailings) 6:15, 6:45, 7:17, 7:52, 8:40, 9:25, 10:25, 11:25, 13:25, 14:25, 15:25, 17:05, 17:40, 18:40, 19:40
Yura Port to Takahama Port (3 sailings) 5:55, 13:05, 16:45
Tomari Port to Takahama Port (15 sailings) 6:30, 7:00, 7:35, 8:20, 9:05, 10:05, 11:05, 12:05, 14:05, 15:05, 16:05, 17:25, 18:20, 19:20, 20:10

During the period, there are many sailings if you cross to Tomari Port and return from Tomari Port. The loop in this article goes in at Tomari Port and returns to Tomari Port, so it can be done during the period too. If you finish at Yura Port, there are only three sailings from Yura, at 5:55, 13:05, and 16:45. It says the free shuttle bus runs between Yura Port and Tomari Port, but it does not say that it carries cars (the original says “shuttle”).

The boarding area and parking at Takahama Port

Ehime Prefecture writes that Takahama Port is right in front of Takahama Station of Iyotetsu. On Gogoshima’s “Boarding area and how to board map”, there are “P reception” and “Takahama Port paid parking” near the boarding area, and lines 1, 2, and 3 inside the parking lot. The map does not explain what the numbers mean. It does not say whether “lane 1” for boarding with a car is the same as the line 1 on the map.

We could not find the number of spaces, the fees, the hours, or the operator of the parking on the pages of Gogoshima, Matsuyama City, or Ehime Prefecture. In the section on Mitsuhama Port and Takahama Port of Ehime Prefecture’s “Access from within Matsuyama City”, there is the following sentence.

Translation: “If you go by car, both ports have parking.”

This sentence is not in the section on Gogoshima, but in the section on Mitsuhama Port and Takahama Port, which has guidance to Tsurishima, Nakajima, and other islands. The update date is November 14, 2023. Parking at ports as a whole is in Leaving your car and taking a boat: parking at Ehime ports.

The island road is Prefectural Road 195, the Gogoshima Loop Road

In the “Sections closed during abnormal weather” table of Ehime Prefecture’s “Links for Ehime Road Information” (updated March 2, 2026), Prefectural Road 195, the Gogoshima Loop Road, has two rows. One is 3.7 km from 203-ko, Tomari-cho to 421-1-ko, Tomari-cho, and the other is 1.1 km in Kadota-cho. In the column of closure standards, hourly rainfall is 40 and continuous rainfall is 200 (the table does not write units. The reason for reading them as mm is in Roads that close in Ehime in heavy rain and typhoons: advance closure sections and rain and wind rules on expressways).

Translation: “The road is closed when one item of the closure standard is reached.”

How to read this when you cross on a rainy day is in Roads that close in Ehime in heavy rain and typhoons.

In the map data (OpenStreetMap), this prefectural road is connected almost as one line from the fishing port at Washigasu in the west of the island, past the side of Yuhigatoge Pass, the side of Koibito Pass, Tomari Port, Funakoshi, and Yura Port, and beyond Kadota-cho in the northeast to the northeast end of the island. Adding up the lengths of the lines gives about 13.9 km (a calculation from the lines in the map data, not an official number). It does not form a ring around the island.

We found no statements on the official pages of Ehime Prefecture and Matsuyama City about the width, passing, steep slopes, or tunnels of the prefectural road and municipal roads. The only thing we found about the width of the island roads is the description in the Satojima Meguri Liaison Council’s 2013 model course, quoted later.

Clockwise from Tomari Port: Koibito Pass, Yuhigatoge Pass, Washigasu, Yura, and Funakoshi in this order

This article lists the places in the order of getting off at Tomari Port, then going around Koibito Pass, Yuhigatoge Pass, Washigasu, Yura Port, Kannonji Temple, and Funakoshi, and returning to Tomari Port. On a map, this is clockwise. There are three reasons.

  • The Satojima Meguri Liaison Council’s model course goes from Tomari Port toward Koibito Pass.
  • The island is shaped like a gourd, with Tomari in the south, Yura in the north, and Funakoshi at the narrow part. If you go from Koibito Pass in the south, Yuhigatoge Pass in the west, and Washigasu in the northwest, come out at Yura in the north, and return to Tomari through Funakoshi in the center, you can go around on the roads in the map data without overlapping the same section.
  • If you make the return Tomari Port, there are many sailings even on the temporary schedule of October 14 to 20, and you only need to look at the return sailings at Tomari Port.

The lengths following the lines in the map data are about 1.5 km from Tomari Port to Koibito Pass, about 2.8 km from Koibito Pass to Yuhigatoge Pass, about 3.0 km from Yuhigatoge Pass to Washigasu, about 2.6 km from Washigasu to Yura Port, about 0.2 km from Yura Port to Kannonji Temple, about 2.0 km from Kannonji Temple to Funakoshi, and about 1.8 km from Funakoshi to Tomari Port, for a total of about 13.9 km (a calculation we made by following the lines and adding them up, not an official number. It changes depending on the roads you choose).

In the period of the normal schedule, you can also stop at Kannonji Temple and return from Yura Port. The last sailing from Yura is 19:50.

Koibito Pass is about 1.5 km from Tomari Port. It is on the south side of the island

The Satojima Meguri Liaison Council’s model course “Enjoy a mini drive on Gogoshima and rediscover its charm” (dated June 7, 2013) writes this about the way from Tomari Port to Koibito Pass.

Translation: “To the first stop, Koibito Pass, arrive at Tomari Port from Takahama Port and go about 1.5 km to the southeast along Prefectural Road 195.”

In the map data, Koibito Pass is on the south side of Tomari Port. Prefectural Road 195 leaves Tomari Port heading southeast, then turns west and passes the side of Koibito Pass (this is what we saw on the lines in the map data, not an official statement). The whole of this model course takes “about 80 minutes” of travel time and “about 15 km” of travel distance, and goes to the northern end of the island.

Matsuyama City’s sightseeing site writes the following about Koibito Pass.

Translation: “There is a bench for resting, but please be careful not to step on the flower bed.”

This page does not mention parking at Koibito Pass.

The road up to Yuhigatoge Pass is described in the 2013 model course as “the road becomes narrow”

According to Matsuyama City’s sightseeing site, Yuhigatoge Pass is “at the top of the Komochiyama farm road”, about 5 minutes by car from Tomari Port.

Translation: “‘Yuhigatoge Pass’, at the top of the Komochiyama farm road, is a superb view point where you can look out over the islands of the Kutsuna Islands floating in the Seto Inland Sea, such as Tsurishima, Nakajima, and Mutsuki Island, to the west, and the city of Matsuyama to the east.”

The Satojima Meguri Liaison Council’s model course (2013) describes the road going up from Prefectural Road 195 to Komochiyama as follows.

Translation: “If you drive along Prefectural Road 195, partway it splits into an upper road and a lower road. The lower one is a somewhat bigger road and is a new road. If you are not going to Komochiyama, take the lower road. If you go up, you will reach Komochiyama, but the road becomes narrow, so please be careful.”

Translation: “Even if you keep going, it is a dead end. Go back down to the lower road, and head north along the road.”

The description of the road width is from 2013. We cannot read the present condition of the road from the official pages.

Washigasu, Yura Port, Kannonji Temple, and Funakoshi

Ehime Prefecture’s “Charms of the islands: Gogoshima” writes that Washigasu Beach is a swimming beach with calm waves on the opposite side of Yura Bay, about a 10-minute walk from Funakoshi. The road from Yuhigatoge Pass to Washigasu and the road from Washigasu to Yura include, besides Prefectural Road 195, roads that have names such as “Gogoshima Line 42”, “Gogoshima Line 52”, and “Gogoshima Line 6” in the map data. We have not confirmed whether they are municipal roads in an official road register.

Kannonji Temple in Yura is temple number 1 of the Shima Shikoku pilgrimage on April 20 and 21 every year. For Kannonji Temple, the Satojima Meguri Liaison Council’s model course writes “Park the car nearby, pay your respects, and go back to the port”, but does not specify where to park.

Funakoshi is the narrow part of the island in the map data. Ehime Prefecture writes that Funakoshi Wakehime Shrine is “the tutelary shrine of Gogoshima, located at about the center of Gogoshima”. Gogoshima’s “Island sightseeing information” writes that the boat dance, an intangible cultural property of the prefecture, is held on the sea in front of this shrine on the first Saturday of October every year. We could not find road restrictions or crowds for that day on the official pages.

According to Ehime Prefecture, Mt. Ko-fuji (Iyo-Kofuji, elevation 282 m) is a mountain you climb by a hiking trail from Tomari Port, passing between the houses of the village. We have not included it in the route of this article.

In Kadota-cho in the north, a collapse on Prefectural Road 195 was reported in June 2026

Ehime Shimbun ONLINE’s “Road collapse on Gogoshima, Matsuyama; damage from Typhoon No. 6” is a June 4, 2026 article, and the opening shown on the screen is the following sentence.

Translation: “Because of the large Typhoon No. 6, a collapse of the road surface was found on the morning of the 4th on the prefectural road Gogoshima Loop Road in Kadota-cho, Matsuyama.”

The rest was paid and we could not read it. From the range shown on the screen, we cannot tell the extent of the collapse or whether a closure or other restriction was put in place. Even when we searched Ehime Prefecture’s website (Chuyo Regional Office, Road Maintenance Division), we have not found a notice about this matter or an official page that reports the repair. We have not confirmed whether you can drive on Prefectural Road 195 in Kadota-cho on the date of retrieval (October 13, 2026).

Kadota-cho is the same town name as the second row (1.1 km) of the rainfall closure table quoted above. The Satojima Meguri Liaison Council’s 2013 model course goes after Komochiyama to Haisobana (這磯鼻), Tenzaisho Shrine (天在諸神社), and Kotohikibana (琴引鼻, the northern tip of the island), then goes down the east coast and ends at Kannonji Temple just before Yura Port. In the map data, Prefectural Road 195 continues from Yura Port to the northeast through Kadota-cho to the northeast end of the island. For Haisobana, Tenzaisho Shrine, and Kotohikibana, we could not find named points in the map data and could not confirm their positions, so we have not included them in the points of this article.

For inquiries about prefectural roads in Ehime Prefecture, the contact is the Road Maintenance Division, Civil Engineering Department, Ehime Prefecture (089-912-2720). Where to check road closures is in Where to check Ehime road information before you leave.

Fuel, toilets, and parking

We could not confirm a gas station on the island on official pages

The list of gas stations on the JA Matsuyama-shi website has 7 (Mimido 御三戸, Naose 直瀬, Hatanogawa 畑野川, Myojin 明神, Nagata 永田, Ono 小野, and Chuo 中央), and none is on Gogoshima. There is also no gas station point on Gogoshima in the map data (OpenStreetMap). The store information in Ehime Prefecture’s “Charms of the islands: Gogoshima” does not list a gas station either. We have not been able, this time, to look up a gas station on Gogoshima in the store search of a company other than JA.

Not finding one does not mean there is no gas station. Check how much fuel you have before you cross.

Toilets are placed by Matsuyama City at Tomari Port, Funakoshi Port, Yura Port, and Washigasu Fishing Port

In the table of Matsuyama City’s “Public toilets managed by the Cleaning Facilities Division” (updated October 9, 2026), there are four places on Gogoshima.

Facility name Location Toilet type
Gogoshima Tomari public toilet (興居島泊公衆便所) Tomari-cho (Gogoshima Tomari Port) Flush
Gogoshima Funakoshi public toilet (興居島船越公衆便所) Tomari-cho (Gogoshima Funakoshi Port) Flush
Gogoshima Yura public toilet (興居島由良公衆便所) Yura-cho (Gogoshima Yura Port) Flush
Gogoshima Washigasu public toilet (興居島鷲ヶ巣公衆便所) Yura-cho (Gogoshima Washigasu Fishing Port) Flush

In the data of Matsuyama City’s “Public toilet data list” (CC-BY), all four places have hours of 0:00 to 23:59, and the toilet for wheelchair users is “none”. Aikogahama (相子ヶ浜) has no toilet in this Matsuyama City list. Ehime Prefecture writes that the beach hut at Aikogahama (from July to about September) has a toilet and shower.

Ehime Prefecture’s “Charms of the islands: Gogoshima” (updated November 17, 2023) lists A-Coop Yura (just after you leave Yura Port, closed Wednesdays, 10:00 to 18:00) and Tomari Co-op (front right when you leave Tomari Port, closed Sundays and open on holidays, 9:00 to 18:00, closed January 1 to 3). Vending machines are near the ports, on the road along the coast, in front of the Gogoshima branch office of Matsuyama City Hall, and other places. The shop hours are the numbers on the 2023 page.

Parking on the island

For the parking at Tomari Port, Yura Port, Koibito Pass, Yuhigatoge Pass, Washigasu, and Kannonji Temple, we could not find official numbers of spaces or fees. The temporary schedule PDF has one sentence, “Please follow the manners when using the parking spaces around the port.”

For the return, the last sailing is 20:10 from Tomari Port and 19:50 from Yura Port

On the normal schedule, the last sailing from Tomari to Takahama is 20:10 and the last from Yura to Takahama is 19:50. The times are as in the table above. The timetables of Gogoshima and Ehime Prefecture mark these last sailings with ◆ and treat them as sailings that do not run from December 31 to January 3.

The steps for leaving the parking after you arrive at Takahama Port are not written on the pages of Gogoshima, Matsuyama City, or Ehime Prefecture.

When you cross in a rental car

In the text of the rental terms of Nippon Rent-A-Car, Budget Rent a Car, ORIX Rent a Car, and Times Car Rental, we found no words “ferry” or “remote island”. What the terms do not write does not mean that the branch allows it. Before you rent, ask the branch whether you can cross “from Takahama Port to Gogoshima by ferry”.

Nippon Rent-A-Car’s “Guide to use” has the following note under the table of insurance and compensation for the standard course.

Translation: “Please note that for some remote islands, we may not be able to provide roadside service.”

What comes next for this article

The latitude and longitude of each point have been checked with OpenStreetMap information (only Funakoshi Port uses the position in Matsuyama City’s public toilet data). The point numbers will be the same as the chapter numbers of the driving video. This article is written only from official pages and map data, and we have not driven the route yet. After we drive it, we will add the width of the prefectural road and municipal roads, passing, the road to Yuhigatoge Pass, the guide signs, and how the boarding area at Takahama Port looks.

These are the things we could not confirm on official pages.

  • The extent of the collapse of Prefectural Road 195 in Kadota-cho, whether there is a restriction, and whether you can drive on it on the date of retrieval
  • Official statements about the width, passing, steep slopes, and tunnels of Prefectural Road 195 and the municipal roads of the island
  • Official numbers for the distance and time to go around the island (the model course’s about 15 km and about 80 minutes are from 2013)
  • The positions of Haisobana, Tenzaisho Shrine, and Kotohikibana
  • Whether there is a gas station on the island, and its hours
  • The number of spaces, fees, and operator of Takahama Port paid parking, and the parking at ports and sightseeing spots on the island
  • Where cars wait at the boarding area at Takahama Port, and the check-in deadline
  • The reason the travel times to Tomari Port and Yura Port are written the opposite way by the ferry company and the prefecture
  • How cars are loaded on the temporary schedule (October 14 to 20)
  • Whether you can take this route in a rental car
