No official page gives the driving time from the airport to Shimonada Station

No official page was found that says how many minutes it takes by car from Matsuyama Airport to Shimonada Station. What was found covers the whole of Iyo City, or the trip from an interchange to Michi-no-Eki Futami

What it says Which page Direction and range
About 20 minutes by car from Matsuyama Airport to Iyo Map on the “Access” page of the Iyo City tourism website Airport to Iyo City (not Shimonada Station)
About 15 minutes by car between the Iyo area and the Futami area Map on the same page Between areas (not stations)

The three numbers above were read from the map (the image file’s URL contains “2021/03”) and from the text. This article does not add the numbers together to make up a time from the airport to Shimonada Station.

The order of roads from the airport to National Route 378, as seen in map data

The road names and route numbers were checked in OpenStreetMap map data. Map data is not an official road register. What could be checked is that those names and route numbers are recorded for those roads, and the order in which the roads connect.

Order Road Direction Intersections passed
1 Prefectural Road 18, Matsuyama Airport Line East Matsuyama Airport Entrance
2 Section shared by Prefectural Road 18 and Prefectural Road 22 East, about 430 m Matsuyama Airport Entrance → the traffic-light intersection where Prefectural Road 22 leaves to the south
3 Prefectural Road 22, Iyo-Matsuyama Port Line South, then southwest Junction with Prefectural Road 190 → Hayu Junior High School
4 Section shared by Prefectural Road 22 and Prefectural Road 326 South Traffic-light intersection in Masaki → Shinkawa Station intersection
5 National Route 378 Southwest from the traffic-light intersection in Iyo Mitsuaki → Futami → Shimonada

In map data, Prefectural Road 22 ends at the traffic-light intersection in Iyo where it meets National Route 378. From the same intersection, a short section of National Route 378 that connects to National Route 56 is recorded going east.

East of the airport, “under construction” roads are recorded around Prefectural Road 22, so older roads and new roads run side by side. Map data can differ from the actual roads, so follow the guide signs on site.

The route in this article is the order in which the roads connect in map data. No official guide was found that says “take this road” from the airport to Shimonada Station. You can also use the Matsuyama Expressway (Iyo IC), and the official page gives a time from Iyo IC to Michi-no-Eki Futami. The Matsuyama Expressway toll was not checked in this article.

National Route 378 is called the “Yuyake Koyake Line”

The Ehime Prefecture re-re-evaluation sheet (National Route 378, Mitsuaki widening) gives the road’s nickname as follows.

Translation: “Because this route runs mostly along the coast, you can see beautiful sunsets sinking into the sea, so it is called the ‘Yuyake Koyake Line’ and is also popular as a drive course.”

In map data, the nickname is recorded from around the boundary between Mitsuaki and Takanokawa in Futami, going southwest. There is no record of it for the section from the Iyo urban side to Mitsuaki (near points 8 to 9).

The same document has a description of the road width for the section from Mitsuaki, Iyo to Takanokawa, Futami (planned length 3.7 km).

Translation: “Although the current road has two lanes, it does not have a width suited to the traffic volume or a curve radius that can handle actual driving speeds, so safety and smoothness are insufficient. There were 22 traffic accidents in the past 10 years (2008 to 2017), and 11 of them (50%) were caused by lack of width, such as head-on collisions and wheels running off the road.” “The current road has no sidewalk, and pedestrians and cyclists feel uneasy.”

These numbers are from 2008 to 2017 (Heisei 20 to 29). For the remaining section, the same document says “a bypass section with sharp hairpin curves on the current road, and the sections before and after it,” and gives fiscal 2024 (Reiwa 6) as the target for completion. Whether the Mitsuaki Bypass has opened could not be confirmed on an official page. In map data, as of October 13, 2026, it is recorded as a road under construction (point 9).

The Shimonada Station parking is for pick-up and drop-off. Sightseeing cars use the city’s temporary lot or Shimonada Sports Park

The parking lots that official pages list are these three.

Place Spaces Fee Distance to the station
Station parking Not stated Not stated Next to the station (for pick-up and drop-off)
City temporary parking lot 20 (tourism website), “about 20” (map) Free About 200 m to the west (tourism website), about 150 m (city official page)
Shimonada Sports Park Not stated Not stated 15-minute walk (about 1 km)

JR Shikoku’s “Shimonada Station” page has a note about the station parking.

The “JR Shimonada Station” page of the Ehime Prefecture official tourism website (Iyokan Net) writes “none” in the parking field. The “JR Shimonada Station” page of the Iyo City tourism website says the following.

Translation: “* Please use the temporary parking lot about 200 m west of the station (20 cars, free).”

The Iyo City official page “About parking for visitors to JR Shimonada Station” (posted August 18, 2025) gives the distance as 150 m and asks visitors to enter in a certain way.

Translation: “A city temporary parking lot for visitors to Shimonada Station has been set up about 150 meters from the station. The space near the slope up to the lot is narrow and gets very crowded, so please enter from the Ozu (Nagahama) side, as shown on the National Route 378 signs. Accidents often happen near the entrance of the city temporary parking lot and inside it. Please drive with great care when you use it.”

The distance differs between official pages: the tourism website says “about 200 m to the west,” the city’s parking page says “about 150 meters,” and the city’s closure notice says “about 200 meters.”

The map on the same page has these written notes: “Entrance from National Route 378 to Shimonada Station (U-turn),” “Slope up to the parking lot (from the Nagahama side),” and “about 20 cars can park.” On the map, the station is drawn on the “to Matsuyama” side, and the city temporary parking lot on the “to Ozu (Nagahama)” side. The text does not say where a car coming from the Matsuyama side should turn around to enter “from the Ozu (Nagahama) side.” Follow the signs on site.

The other parking lot is Shimonada Sports Park (Shimonada Community Center)

Translation: “As parking that visitors to Shimonada Station and others can use, we have opened the parking space of Shimonada Community Center (Shimonada Sports Park). Please note that you may not be able to park there when an event is held at Shimonada Community Center (Shimonada Sports Park), for example.”

From the sports park to the station, it is about a 15-minute walk. The city’s map gives the distance as about 1 km. The city’s map shows a route along National Route 378. The city’s closure notice says “Please follow the traffic rules as you go.” In map data, the sports park is about 0.9 km southwest of Shimonada Station.

On long weekends, New Year and event days, the city’s temporary lot may be closed

The city’s temporary parking lot may be closed during three-day weekends and long holiday periods. The reason given in the notice for October 10 to 12, 2026 (posted October 9, 2026) is as follows.

Translation: “JR Shimonada Station is very crowded because of the increase in tourists. Traffic jams and accidents are especially likely during long weekends, so the city parking lot about 200 meters from Shimonada Station will be closed to ease crowding and prevent accidents. Please be aware.”

The concert is described on the “JR Shimonada Station” page of the Iyo City tourism website as held on “the first Saturday of September every year.” The closure of October 10 to 12 ended the day before October 13, 2026, when this article was written. As of that day, no notice of a later closure was found. If you plan to visit on a long weekend or over New Year, the latest topics on the Iyo City tourism website before you leave will show that year’s closure days.

Parking on the street near the station is prohibited. The road from the national route to the station is not a parking space

Several Iyo City notices carry the same text.

Translation: “Please do not park on the street around the station. It bothers nearby residents and causes traffic accidents and crowding. Around the Kamihama-side entrance (south of the station) of the road leading from National Route 378 to JR Shimonada Station, some places are wide, but this is a city road and not a parking space, so please do not park there.”

The city’s map has two places marked where parking is not allowed. One is the wide spot along the road from the national route to the station (“This space is not a parking space. Please refrain from parking on the street!!”). The other is near the slope up to the city temporary parking lot (“Large vehicles pass through. Please refrain from parking on the street!”).

JR Shikoku puts the station manners on one PDF sheet, “To everyone who visits Shimonada Station.” This PDF is an image and the text cannot be extracted, so it was read on screen. The headings are as follows.

Translation: “When trains arrive and depart, please do not enter the platform unless you are getting on or off. Sitting with your legs hanging over the platform edge and entering the tracks are dangerous. Let us take pleasant photos with a spirit of give and take. Please do not enter the flower bed. Please take your trash home with you. To guests who come with pets. Please be careful about parking manners.”

In the body of the sheet, it says to stay away from the platform edge and the tracks, to keep pets in their cases when entering the station grounds, and, about parking, “Please stop parking on the surrounding roads or in front of residents’ houses, because it bothers the residents.”

Sunset times: in Matsuyama, from 17:00 to 19:24

About the best time to see the sunset, the “JR Shimonada Station” page of the Iyo City tourism website says the following.

Translation: “During the magic hour around sunset, you can enjoy the view of the Iyonada Sea changing from orange to purple and then to navy blue.”

The Michi-no-Eki Futami page says “Futami-cho here has been chosen as one of the ‘Top 100 Sunsets in Japan.’” No official page was found that says how many minutes before sunset you should arrive.

Sunset times were checked in the table for “Matsuyama (Ehime Prefecture)” (latitude 33.8333°, longitude 132.7667°) from the Ephemeris Computation Office of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Here are the 1st and 15th of each month in 2026.

In 2026, the earliest sunset of the year is 17:00 (November 30 to December 10), and the latest is 19:24 (June 24 to July 4). On October 13, the day this article was written, it was 17:38.

This table is for the reference point in Matsuyama. Using the position in map data, Shimonada Station is about 0.18 degrees (longitude) west of the Matsuyama reference point. Whether the sunset time at Shimonada Station can be read directly from this table has not been checked.

Michi-no-Eki Futami is a parking lot before you reach Shimonada Station

“Michi-no-Eki Futami,” along National Route 378, is listed by the Iyo City tourism website as having 128 parking spaces, free. Its “Other” field says the following.

Translation: “* From 22:00 to 5:00, the west (Nagahama side) parking lot is closed. Please be aware. * The toilets and other facilities can be used 24 hours. * Entering the facility with pets (dogs, cats and so on) is prohibited. Thank you for your understanding.”

The top page of the Michi-no-Eki Futami official website says “Flying drones in the park is prohibited.” The shop hours differ between the two official pages.

Shop Iyo City tourism website Michi-no-Eki Futami official website
Shops (the direct-sales shop Asahi-san (海山産直あさひさん) and the tenant shops) 8:30-17:00 Asahi-san is 8:30-17:00, closed on the 3rd Tuesday (open every day in July and August)
Restaurant 11:00-17:00 (last order 16:00) Mondo Bleu is 11:00-17:00 (last order 16:30), closed on the 3rd Tuesday and every Thursday (open every day in July and August)

The Iyo City tourism website gives the regular closing day as “3rd Tuesday. * Open every day in July and August.” On the Michi-no-Eki Futami official website, the news section has “Notice of shop closures” dated March 11, 2026, and “Notice of reopening of the farm-products shop, restaurant and tenants” dated April 24, 2026. Shops may change and business days may change, so check the official website before the day you go.

The shop hours are given as until 17:00. On the days in the table above when sunset is later than 17:00, the shops close before sunset. The parking lot and toilets are described as usable at night too, as the “Other” field says.

On the way back, return along the same National Route 378 after sunset

When you go back from Shimonada Station toward Matsuyama, the road is also National Route 378. In map data, it is recorded as a two-lane road all the way from Shimonada Station to Iyo. The facts that official pages give about the way back are these.

  • An Ehime Prefecture document says National Route 378 “has the function of an alternative route when National Route 56 is closed for a long time due to disasters or other causes, as it is often closed by heavy rain or snow.”
  • The same document says the Mitsuaki-Takanokawa section has no sidewalk on the current road. If you park at the sports park, the map from the city shows you walking about 1 km between there and the station along National Route 378.
  • The pre-set traffic restriction sections listed on the Ehime Prefecture “Links about road information” page (updated March 2, 2026) include, for National Route 378, sections in Yawatahama, Seiyo and Sumazawa in Nagahama-cho, Ozu. No section within Iyo City is listed. If you go on from Shimonada Station to Nagahama-cho, Ozu, this list will tell you.
  • For telephone inquiries about national routes and prefectural roads that are not managed by the national government, the same page lists the Ehime Prefecture Civil Engineering Department Road Maintenance Division (089-912-2720). Road information within Ehime is available from the Japan Road Traffic Information Center (050-3369-6638).

For the time on the way back, the map on the “Access” page of the Iyo City tourism website gives about 15 minutes by car between the Iyo area and the Futami area. The Michi-no-Eki Futami page of the same website says about 15 minutes by car from Iyo IC on the Matsuyama Expressway and about 20 minutes from Nakayama Smart IC (these are times from the interchange to the roadside station). No official page was found that gives the time from Shimonada Station to Matsuyama Airport. For the rental car return time, check the airport’s rental and return information separately.

What comes next for this article

The latitude and longitude of the points, and the road route numbers and traffic-light intersection names, were checked with OpenStreetMap information. The point numbers will be the same as the chapter numbers in the driving video. This article was written only from official pages and map data, and has not been driven yet. After driving it, we will add how the intersection to Prefectural Road 22 east of the airport looks, the signs at the traffic-light intersection onto National Route 378, the road width in the Mitsuaki section, the entrance and exit of Michi-no-Eki Futami, the road from the front of Shimonada Station to the city temporary parking lot, and how to walk from the sports park to the station.

What could not be confirmed on official pages is as follows.
