Before you return a rental car at Matsuyama Airport: fuel rules, return times, and the way back to the airport

On the day you return: refuel, return to the office, then a shuttle to the airport

The place of the rental counters and how to pick up the car at each of the 7 companies are in What to know before renting a car at Matsuyama Airport. This article is about the day you return the cars of those 7 companies. We checked the fuel rules, office hours, who to contact when you are late, and how to get from the office back to the airport on the official pages and in the rental terms of each company.

At every company, you return the car not inside the airport building but at an office outside the airport. The return guide of Times Car (タイムズカー) is written in this order: when you arrive at the store, speak to the staff; check the condition of the car with the staff; and pay any extra charge. Toyota Rent a Car (トヨタレンタカー) says the store staff check for damage and settle the overtime and the fuel charge. Nissan Rent a Car (日産レンタカー) has two flows: one when you do the procedure at the store counter, and one for “Self Ride & Go”, where you return the car to an unmanned station.

Fuel rules: at all 7 companies, you pay for fuel if you do not return the car full

The full-tank rule of each company is as follows.

For Heisei Rent-a-Car, the pages we checked had no sentence saying “return it full”. We found only the fuel charge rule in the rental terms. The handling may differ by plan, such as the Komikomi plan. Please read the explanation of the plan you reserved.

The rental terms of Nissan Rent a Car have a special clause for e-share mobi (called the eSM service in the terms). It says the following.

借受人又は運転者はガソリン等の燃料補充を必須でないものとします。

Translation: “The renter or the driver is not required to refill gasoline or other fuel.”

The user guide says that Self Ride & Go is returned full, and an image of the receipt from refueling is submitted. From the pages we checked, we could not tell whether rentals at the Matsuyama Airport store count as e-share mobi. Please check your reservation confirmation.

When you cannot fill the tank, the fuel charge follows a formula set by the company

2 companies publish the formula for the calculation when the tank is not full on their official pages.

Toyota Rent a Car says that hybrid cars and other cars are settled differently. The calculation for cars other than hybrids is as follows.

お客様走行距離÷車種ごとの実燃費（当社所定の計算式で算出）×店舗ごとの燃料単価

Translation: “The distance you drove ÷ the actual fuel economy of each car model (calculated by the company’s set formula) × the fuel unit price of each store”

The same page also says how it is handled if you refueled.

※お客様が途中で給油された場合は、算出された燃料代から、給油所が発行したレシートの金額を差し引きます

Translation: “* If you refueled on the way, the amount on the receipt issued by the gas station is subtracted from the calculated fuel charge.”

For hybrid cars, there is a “hybrid fuel economy settlement” that does not require returning full. The fuel charge is calculated from the distance driven and the actual fuel economy. It says the charge differs by store, so you should ask the store you use.

Times Car publishes the standard for its refueling service fee as follows.

燃料単価1リットルあたり＝（石油情報センター平均単価※）＋10円（※変動相場あり）　＊離島除く

Translation: “Fuel unit price per liter = (average unit price of the Oil Information Center ) + 10 yen ( the market price changes). *Remote islands excluded”

走行1kmあたり単価＝燃料単価÷（自動車燃費車種別燃費値［国土交通省算出］×0.7［当社基準係数］）

Translation: “Unit price per 1 km driven = fuel unit price ÷ (fuel economy value of each car model [calculated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism] × 0.7 [the company’s standard coefficient])”

Nippon Rent-A-Car and Budget Rent a Car do not publish a formula. They write that it costs more. This is the original text of Nippon Rent-A-Car.

満タンでお貸しいたしますので、自動車メーカーの指定する燃料で満タンにして返却してください。ご都合により満タンで返却できない場合には、別に定める走行キロ換算料金により精算させていただくか、燃料ゲージの残量による精算をさせていただきます。この場合、実際の給油金額より割高となりますので、あらかじめご了承ください。

Translation: “We lend the car with a full tank, so please return it with a full tank of the fuel the car maker specifies. If you cannot return it full for some reason, we will settle by a separately set per-kilometer conversion charge, or by the amount left on the fuel gauge. In this case, it will cost more than the actual amount of refueling, so please understand in advance.”

This is the original text of Budget Rent a Car.

ご都合により、給油せずにご返却する場合には別に定める走行キロ換算料金により精算させていただきます。換算方法でのご精算の場合は市場の給油金額より割高となりますので予めご了承ください。

Translation: “If you return the car without refueling for some reason, we will settle by a separately set per-kilometer conversion charge. When settling by the conversion method, it will cost more than the market price of refueling, so please understand in advance.”

ORIX Rent a Car writes that when the tank is not full, it settles by a conversion table set by the company, based on the actual distance driven. The rental terms of Nissan Rent a Car also say that you pay the amount calculated by the company’s set conversion table, according to the distance driven during use (Article 27, paragraph 2).

How to refuel: Times Car’s notes on self-service and what counts as full

Times Car also writes about how to refuel.

また、セルフスタンドでの給油は極力ご遠慮ください。（油種間違いを起こされた場合は、修理にかかる費用を全額ご負担いただくことになります。）

Translation: “Also, please avoid refueling at self-service stations as much as possible. (If you put in the wrong type of fuel, you will have to pay the full cost of repair.)”

ガソリン満タン：「カチッ」音とともに自動的に給油が停止した時点が満タンです。危険ですので継ぎ足し給油は行わないでください。

Translation: “Full tank of gasoline: the tank is full when refueling stops automatically with a click. It is dangerous, so please do not add more fuel after that.”

For diesel cars, it has the following note.

※軽油車の場合、上記基準でおこなうと満タンにならない場合があります。燃料ゲージが満タンになるまで給油してください。

Translation: “* For diesel cars, the tank may not become full with the standard above. Please refuel until the fuel gauge shows full.”

Office locations and hours: some companies close at 19:00 or 18:00

You return the car at the office of each company near the airport. We checked the address, the hours, and how to get back to the airport after returning on the official store pages.

Budget Rent a Car answers about renting and returning like this on its FAQ page.

レンタカーの貸渡・返却は、営業時間内となっております。

Translation: “Renting and returning rental cars is done within business hours.”

The store page of Nippon Rent-A-Car also has this sentence.

・営業時間外となる最終便の対応を終了いたしました。ご不便をおかけしますがご予約の際にはお気を付けください。

Translation: “- We have ended the service for the last flights that arrive outside business hours. We are sorry for the inconvenience, so please be careful when you make a reservation.”

The store page of Nissan Rent a Car has this note.

送迎対応時間外の送迎はありません。店舗営業時間外のセルフライドゴーご利用時はご注意ください。

Translation: “There is no shuttle outside the shuttle hours. Please be careful when you use Self Ride & Go outside the store’s business hours.”

The deadlines for flight procedures differ by airline

The official page of Matsuyama Airport explains the flow of domestic departures in this order: check-in on the 1st floor, the security check on the 2nd floor, and boarding. About the deadlines, it says the following.

チェックイン締切時刻は、航空会社によって異なります。

Translation: “The check-in deadline differs by airline.”

保安検査の締切時刻は、航空会社によって異なります。

Translation: “The security check deadline differs by airline.”

The airport’s page gives no number for how many minutes before departure. Check the number in the guide of the airline for your flight.

On the rental company side, Times Car gives a guide for the return time on its office page.

フライト時刻の1時間前までにご返却ください。店舗より空港まで送迎致します。（約10分）

Translation: “Please return the car at least 1 hour before the flight time. We take you from the store to the airport. (About 10 minutes)”

On the pages we checked for the other 6 companies, we did not find how many minutes before the flight you should return the car.

If you may be late returning the car: 5 companies ask for contact in advance

The rules for being late are as follows.

Article 23, paragraph 2 of the terms says that if you return after the rental period without consent, you pay the charge for the extra period, plus a penalty of double the overtime charge for the extra time
Nippon Rent-A-Car (ニッポンレンタカー)	If you cannot make the return time, contact the office you started from in advance and get approval	You pay the overtime charge in the price list when you return. With the “Anshin course” fee course, if you contact them at least 1 hour before the planned return time, there is a “return time overtime peace-of-mind service” that halves the overtime charge for up to 3 hours (it does not apply to changes of more than 3 hours or to some travel products and coupons, and covers only the basic fee)
ORIX Rent a Car (オリックスレンタカー)	Be sure to contact the store you started from. The overtime charge is settled when you return	If you extend without contact, a set penalty. Article 23, paragraph 2 of the terms says that if you go over without consent, you pay the charge for the extra period, plus 200% of the overtime charge for the extra time as a “return time change penalty”
Times Car (タイムズカー)	When you extend, contact the store (the one you started from or the one you return to) in advance	The extension charge is settled when you return. Article 31, paragraph 3 of the terms says that if you go over the return date and time, you pay a separately set overtime charge (except when you completed the extension procedure before the end of the rental period)

Heisei Rent-a-Car (平成レンタカー)	Article 12, paragraph 1 of the terms says that you receive the company’s consent in advance when you change the rental conditions	Article 20, paragraph 2 of the terms says that if you do not return by the end of the rental period, you compensate the company for the damage. If the period was changed with consent, the rental charge for the changed period (Article 22). The amount of the overtime charge was not found on the pages we checked
Nissan Rent a Car (日産レンタカー)	Article 13, paragraph 1 of the terms says that you receive the company’s consent in advance when you change the rental conditions	Article 22, paragraph 2 of the terms has a rule on payment when the return is late. The extension charge when you extend with consent is in Article 25

The guide of ORIX Rent a Car also explains what happens if you change the contract time without contact.

また、無断でご契約時間を変更されますと賃貸借契約違反になり、これにより発生する損害はすべてお客さまのご負担となります。

Translation: “Also, if you change the contract time without notice, it is a breach of the rental contract, and you bear all damage that results.”

For the contact point, Toyota Rent a Car, Nippon Rent-A-Car, ORIX Rent a Car, and Budget Rent a Car write the store you started from, and Times Car writes the store you started from or the one you return to. You can check before you leave whether the paper you received when you rented the car has the phone number of the store.

Gas stations near the airport: the official pages we checked did not name any

We read the store pages and return guides of the 7 companies. We did not find any company that names a gas station near the airport. What they write is like this.

• Toyota Rent a Car, ORIX Rent a Car: refuel at the nearest gas station
• Times Car: fill the tank at a gas station near the return store
• Budget Rent a Car: fill the tank at a nearby station

Nippon Rent-A-Car writes that, as a “phone guidance service for when you are in trouble” included in the “Anshin course” fee course, there is a service that tells you the nearest gas station from your current location.

The offices are in Minamiyoshida-cho and Kitayoshida-cho in Matsuyama City. The store page of Times Car says there is a shuttle of about 10 minutes from the store to the airport. Decide where and when to refuel by counting back from the office hours and from the deadlines of the flight procedures.

ETC cards and lost items: what the companies write

The return page of Toyota Rent a Car has this note.

※ETCカードなどお手荷物にお忘れ物ないよう、よくご確認ください。

Translation: “* Please check carefully that you do not leave items such as the ETC card in your baggage.”

If you borrowed an ETC card, some companies need you to settle when you return.

• Nippon Rent-A-Car: when you return, pay the toll in cash or with a partner credit card. The usage statement recorded on the IC chip is printed with a dedicated printer
• ORIX Rent a Car: when you return, the breakdown of use recorded on the ETC card is read, and you pay the fee in cash or by credit card
• Heisei Rent-a-Car: the fee is settled by credit card when you come back. If you lose, have stolen, damage, or deform the card, the card compensation is 10,000 yen (tax included). If the car is not returned after the rental period ends, a notice of invalidity of the card is sent to the road operators

For Times Car, Budget Rent a Car, and Nissan Rent a Car, we did not find how an ETC card is handled at return on the pages we checked. The store page of Nissan Rent a Car says only “ETC card rental available”.

About items left in the car, the rental terms of Toyota Rent a Car, Nippon Rent-A-Car, ORIX Rent a Car, Budget Rent a Car, and Heisei Rent-a-Car say that the renter checks the car for left items at return. The rental terms of Nissan Rent a Car say in Article 24 that the renter confirms that nothing is left behind. The FAQ of Times Car answers as follows.

お忘れ物などがないように、お客様自身でご確認ください。弊社は、お忘れ物の紛失などの責任は負いかねますのであらかじめご了承ください。

Translation: “Please check by yourself that you have not left anything behind. Please understand in advance that we cannot take responsibility for the loss of left items.”

Toyota Rent a Car writes that you should delete the saved points and history in the car navigation. If you do not know how, you can ask the staff when you return.
