This article describes the way for a person who rents a car at Matsuyama Airport, enters the Shimanami Kaido at Imabari IC, crosses the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, leaves at Oshima-minami IC, and drives to Miyakubo. The other articles cover the following.

Oshima-kita IC is close, but a car coming from the Shikoku side cannot leave there

Oshima-kita IC is the one close to the museum. But a car coming from Matsuyama Airport cannot leave at Oshima-kita IC. The access page of the museum’s official site says the following.

Translation: “* Oshima-kita IC and Oshima-minami IC are half interchanges, so from the Imabari and Shikoku direction you cannot leave at the nearest one, Oshima-kita IC. In the same way, from the Honshu direction you cannot leave at Oshima-minami IC, so please be careful. From Onomichi and the Honshu direction: about 3 km from Oshima-kita IC. From Imabari and the Shikoku direction: about 10 km from Oshima-minami IC.”

The IC pages of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company write the same directions. The text of the Oshima-kita IC page is as follows.

Translation: “People coming from the Onomichi (Honshu) side who have business on Oshima, please leave here. People going from Oshima toward Honshu, please enter from this IC. You cannot go toward Shikoku.”

People going from Matsuyama Airport leave at Oshima-minami IC. The about 3 km from the museum to Oshima-kita IC is a guide for people coming from the Honshu side. The number for people coming from the Shikoku side is the about 10 km from Oshima-minami IC.

The guides have different starting points. Adding them up gives about 1 hour 40 minutes (calculated)

We could not find an official travel time that covers the whole way from Matsuyama Airport to the museum. The guides for each section are as follows.

  • Matsuyama Airport to Imabari IC: The official Ehime tourism site, Iyokan Net (いよ観ネット), writes about 1 hour 15 minutes via Prefectural Roads 22 and 183 and National Route 196.
  • Imabari IC to Oshima-minami IC: Imabari City’s tourism information writes about 10 minutes (on the Kirosan Observation Park page).
  • Oshima-minami IC to the museum: Imabari City’s tourism information writes the following.

Translation: “Oshima-minami IC -> about 15 minutes -> destination”

If you add these three, you get about 1 hour 40 minutes. This is a calculation that adds guides with different starting points. It is not an official travel time. The about 1 hour 15 minutes from the airport to Imabari IC is the time for the route on Prefectural Roads 22 and 183 and National Route 196. It is not the time for the expressway route listed in the points of this article (Yogominami IC to Imabari Yunoura IC).

Imabari City’s tourism information also has a guide from the Honshu side. It is about 5 minutes from Oshima-kita IC. The museum’s official site writes about 3 km from Oshima-kita IC and about 10 km from Oshima-minami IC.

From the airport to Imabari IC, entering at Imabari IC

There are two official guides from the Ehime prefectural government for the road from the airport to Imabari. One is the form of about 1 hour 15 minutes to Imabari IC. The other enters the expressway at Yogominami IC and goes to Imabari Station. The points in this article follow the second route, by expressway. The details of the route, and the section where the Imabari-Komatsu Expressway is not yet connected, are written in the Kirosan Observation Park article.

The position of the entrance to Imabari IC should be checked on the guide signs on site. The Imabari IC page has the following 2 lines about the entrance.

Translation: “(To customers entering from Imabari IC) If you use the Honshu-Shikoku road, you can only go toward Honshu. Please be careful.”

Oshima-minami IC is on the way toward Honshu, so entering at Imabari IC does not change the route.

Imabari IC to Oshima-minami IC is 12.5 km. A standard car pays 1,940 yen (cash) or 890 to 1,050 yen (ETC)

In the toll table of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company, the standard car numbers where the row for Imabari IC meets the column for Oshima-minami IC are as follows.

Entrance IC -> Oshima-minami IC Section distance Cash car (non-ETC car) ETC car (weekdays) ETC car (holidays)
Imabari IC 12.5km 1,940 yen 1,050 yen 890 yen

The same numbers are in the tolls article and the Kirosan Observation Park article. If you enter at Imabari-kita IC, the distance to Oshima-minami IC is 7.3 km, and a standard car pays 1,780 yen cash, 900 yen ETC on weekdays, and 840 yen ETC on holidays. The differences between the two entrances, such as that you cannot stop at Kurushima Kaikyo Service Area if you enter at Imabari-kita IC, are written in the Kirosan article.

There is a condition for the holiday toll. The ETC car toll page has the following note.

Translation: “* In fiscal year 2026, the holiday discount for standard cars, kei cars, and similar vehicles does not apply during Golden Week, Obon, Silver Week, the New Year holidays, and three-day weekends. If a standard car, kei car, or similar vehicle uses ETC, the ETC car toll (weekdays) applies.”

From Oshima-minami IC to the museum, about 10 km of local roads

Imabari City’s tourism information writes about 15 minutes from Oshima-minami IC, and the museum’s official site writes about 10 km. We could not find an official guide that describes the route.

When we tried the OpenStreetMap road data from near the exit of Oshima-minami IC to the museum, the route went from National Route 317 through an unnamed road to Prefectural Road 337 (Nagoma-Tomoura Line), then Prefectural Road 49 (Oshima Loop Line), and the distance was about 8.4 to 8.6 km. This is different from the official about 10 km. This is a result tried in the map data, not an official route. The positions of the guide signs should be checked on site.

We could not find an official guide on the road width, passing oncoming vehicles, the passage of large vehicles and buses, or driving at night. The phone number of the museum is 0897-74-1065.

Parking is free: 50 standard cars and 3 large buses and similar

About the museum’s parking lot, the usage guide on the official site writes the following.

Translation: “50 standard cars, 3 large buses and similar (free). * There is also a bicycle parking area for rental bicycles and others. (10 bicycles)”

The area map on the access page shows Parking Lot 1, Parking Lot 2, a parking lot for large vehicles, and a parking space for people with disabilities. It does not give the number of spaces for Lots 1 and 2. Iyokan Net writes “50 standard cars / 3 large vehicles,” and the Imabari Area Tourism Association writes “50 standard cars, 3 large buses,” so the numbers match the official site.

The hours when the parking lot can be used were not written on the official pages we checked. The opening hours of the museum are in the next section.

Open from 9:00 to 17:00, closed on Mondays, 310 yen for the permanent exhibition (adults)

The usage guide page gives the opening hours and closed days as follows.

Translation: “Opening hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30). Closed days: every Monday (if Monday is a holiday, in principle the next day instead). New Year holidays (December 29 to January 3).”

The admission fee for the permanent exhibition for individuals is 310 yen for adults, 250 yen for seniors (65 and over), and 160 yen for students. It is free for high school students and younger, or under 18. Imabari City’s tourism information writes the sightseeing time as “40 minutes to 1 hour.”

The Mondays in October 2026 that are still ahead are the 19th and the 26th. When a Monday is a holiday, the next day is in principle the closed day, so if your departure day falls on the day after a holiday, check the schedule on the official site. The notices on the top page of the official site still include a notice, posted on December 25, 2025, about the New Year closure. This is a notice for a year-end that has passed.

As of October 13, 2026, the list of events and exhibitions on the official site did not show any special exhibition ahead. The special exhibition until September 27, 2026 is shown as “終了しました” (ended).

There are also places in the building you can enter for free. The usage guide lists the Pirate Library and the Museum Shop and Cafeteria on the 1st floor, the Waku-Waku Experience Room on the 2nd floor, and the observation room and observation deck on the 3rd floor as free spaces. The kimono dressing experience is free. Reservations are not accepted, and you sign up on the day.

A stop before the museum: Michi-no-Eki Yoshiumi Ikiikikan

The roadside station near Oshima-minami IC is Yoshiumi Ikiikikan It is on the west side, the opposite direction from the museum, so stopping there adds distance to your trip. For the number of parking spaces, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism writes 106 standard cars, 4 large vehicles, and 2 for people with disabilities, and the operating company writes 100 standard cars, 10 large vehicles, and 2 for people with disabilities. The Ministry writes that the parking lot is “available 24 hours a day.” The shop is open from 9:00 to 17:00, and from 10:00 to 16:00 in winter. The details are in the Kirosan Observation Park article.

What to check before you leave

  • On Sunday, October 25, Imabari IC to Innoshima-kita IC is closed: The official site of the international cycling event “Cycling Shimanami 2026” writes the following.

Translation: “■ Imabari IC <-> Innoshima-kita IC, both directions, 6:00 to 12:40 (6 hours 40 minutes), closed”

Oshima-minami IC is inside this section. For people who come by car, the same page points to detours (the Setonaka Expressway and the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway) or temporary and regular ferries. There are maps for 11 places for restrictions on local roads, and the two maps for the area around Imabari IC and for Oshima are as follows.

  • “MAP 1, around Imabari IC (MAP① 今治IC周辺)” is closed from 6:30 to 10:00, and a detour is drawn on the map.
  • “MAP 7, around Oshima BS (MAP⑦ 大島BS周辺)” is closed from 10:30 to 12:00. We could not confirm how this relates to the road to the museum.

Temporary waiting areas are prepared for each island. On the Imabari side it is “Oshinden Park (大新田公園)” (5-111-7 Oshinden-cho, Imabari), and on Oshima it is “Miyakubo Stone Culture Sports Park (宮窪石文化運動公園)” (3546 Miyakubo, Miyakubo-cho, Imabari). Both are places for people waiting for the closure to end, and the event page writes “高速道路本線及びIC前での待機はできません” (Waiting on the expressway main line or in front of an IC is not allowed).

  • One-way alternating traffic from October 19: For bridge repair work, this restriction is carried out between Omishima IC and Hakatajima IC on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (except holidays) from 9:00 to 5:00 the next morning (planned) (a notice of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company). It is in the section beyond Oshima-minami IC, and the road of this article does not enter it. Details are in the Oyamazumi Shrine article.
  • Expressway closures: As of 7:23 on October 13, 2026, the closure information of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company showed “通行止めはありません。” (There are no closures.) for four-wheeled vehicles on the Nishiseto Expressway. Check again on the day you leave.
  • Bicycles: Where bicycles ride on the Shimanami Kaido, and the rules for passing bicycles by car, are collected in another article.
  • Construction and restrictions on local roads: National, prefectural, and city roads publish information differently depending on who manages them. Where to check is collected in this article.

What we could not confirm

  • An official page with the car travel time for the whole way from Matsuyama Airport to the museum
  • An official route from the exit of Oshima-minami IC to the museum (the official guides only go as far as “about 10 km” and “about 15 minutes”)
  • Official guides on the road width from Oshima-minami IC to the museum, passing oncoming vehicles, the passage of large vehicles and buses, and driving at night
  • The number of spaces in Parking Lot 1 and Parking Lot 2, and the hours the parking lots can be used
  • The route from Imabari Yunoura IC to Imabari IC, and the position of the entrance to Imabari IC
  • How the restriction at “MAP 7, around Oshima BS” on October 25 relates to the road to the museum
  • Whether there are extra closed days in October because a Monday holiday moves the closure to the next day (we did not read the schedule on the official site, because it is shown in an external calendar)
  • The tolls of the Matsuyama Outer Ring Road and the Matsuyama Expressway

What comes next for this article

The latitude and longitude of the points were checked with OpenStreetMap map data. The position of the museum is the point of a museum with its old name in the map data, and the parking lot is one of the parking lots near the building. The point numbers will be the same as the chapter numbers of the driving video. This article was not made from a drive by the operator. It is put together from checking official pages. After we drive the route, we will add how the guide signs appear, which way to turn at the exit of Oshima-minami IC, and the entrance to the museum’s parking lot.
