Of the ICs named in these 3 lines, 3 are in Ehime Prefecture: Oshima-kita IC (大島北IC), Oshima-minami IC (大島南IC), and Imabari-kita IC (今治北IC). Onomichi Ohashi entrance/exit (尾道大橋出入口), Innoshima-kita IC (因島北IC), Innoshima-minami IC (因島南IC), Ikuchijima-kita IC (生口島北IC), and Ikuchijima-minami IC (生口島南IC) are in Hiroshima Prefecture. Imabari IC (今治IC) is not in these 3 lines, but the page for Imabari IC itself has a different note.

Oshima-kita IC is toward Honshu, and Oshima-minami IC is toward Shikoku

On Oshima (Imabari), there are 2 ICs, north and south. The text of each page is below. The text on the Oshima-kita IC page is 3 lines in 2 bullet points.

Translation: “If you have business on Oshima and are coming from the Onomichi (Honshu) side, please exit here. If you are going from Oshima toward Honshu, please enter from this IC. You cannot go toward Shikoku.”

The text on the Oshima-minami IC page is also 3 lines in the same form.

Translation: “If you have business on Oshima and are coming from the Imabari (Shikoku) side, please exit here. If you are going from Oshima toward Shikoku, please enter from this IC. You cannot go toward Honshu.”

When you return to the expressway after exiting to Oshima, the direction you are going decides which IC you enter.

If you enter from Imabari IC or Imabari-kita IC, you can only go toward Honshu

The text on the Imabari-kita IC page is below.

Translation: “If you have business in Imabari and are coming from the Onomichi (Honshu) side, it is convenient to exit here. From Imabari-kita IC, you cannot go to Imabari IC, Kurushima Kaikyo Service Area, or the Matsuyama Expressway (toward Matsuyama and Takamatsu). (To customers entering from Imabari-kita IC) If you use the Honshu-Shikoku roads, you can only go toward Honshu. Please be careful. (To customers exiting at Imabari-kita IC) You can exit at Imabari-kita IC only if you are coming from the Honshu-Shikoku roads (from the Honshu side).”

The text on the Imabari IC page uses the same wording about the direction you can enter in.

Translation: “Please note that it is not connected to the Matsuyama Expressway (toward Matsuyama and Takamatsu). You cannot exit at Imabari-kita IC. (To customers entering from Imabari IC) If you use the Honshu-Shikoku roads, you can only go toward Honshu. Please be careful. (To customers exiting at Imabari IC) You can exit at Imabari IC only if you are coming from the Honshu-Shikoku roads (from the Honshu side).”

The pages say that if you enter the Nishiseto Expressway from these 2 ICs on the Shikoku side, you can only go toward Honshu. You can exit only if you come from the Honshu side of the Honshu-Shikoku roads.

“Not connected to the Matsuyama Expressway” on the Imabari IC page

The first line of the quote above is JB Honshi’s note that the Nishiseto Expressway and the Matsuyama Expressway are not connected. The page for National Route 196 Imabari Road, from the Matsuyama River and National Highway Office of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, gives the purpose of the project for this section as follows.

Translation: “National Route 196 Imabari Road is part of the Imabari-Komatsu Expressway (今治・小松自動車道), a national road for motor vehicles only that forms part of the high-standard road network. It is being built to connect the Nishiseto Expressway (Shimanami Kaido) and the Matsuyama Expressway, forming the high-standard road network, and to help revitalize the region.”

A table on the same page lists the length from Imabari-Komatsu Expressway Imabari IC to Imabari Yunoura IC, 10.3 km, and an issue for the project.

Translation: “Issue for the project: The Seto Inland Sea Shimanami Kaido and the Matsuyama Expressway are not yet connected.”

The heading at the top of the page, as seen on October 11, 2026, still reads as follows.

The city of Imabari writes, “People coming from the Shikoku side, please do not use the expressway.”

On the sightseeing spot page of the city of Imabari (Imabari Itoyama Rental Cycle), the access section has directions for people coming from the Shikoku side. This is the original text from the “By car” row under “Access from the Imabari side.”

Translation: “[From the Shikoku side] Imabari Yunoura IC -> about 30 minutes -> destination. People coming from the Shikoku side, please do not use the expressway. *For people coming from the Shikoku side, Imabari Yunoura IC is the last one. If you use Imabari IC or Imabari-kita IC, you will end up going as far as Oshima-minami IC. Please be very careful.”

The “By car” row under “Access from the Honshu side” on the same page is only one line.

Translation: “[From the Honshu and Shimanami Kaido side] Imabari-kita IC -> about 5 minutes -> destination.”

The title of this page, when we saw it on September 16, 2026, was “糸山サイクリングターミナル(サンライズ糸山)” (Itoyama Cycling Terminal, Sunrise Itoyama). As of October 11, 2026, the title is “今治糸山レンタサイクル” (Imabari Itoyama Rental Cycle), and the URL is the same.

To stop at Kurushima Kaikyo Service Area from the Shikoku side, enter from Imabari IC

The Imabari-kita IC page also has a section about Kurushima Kaikyo Service Area (来島海峡SA).

Translation: “If you are going to Kurushima Kaikyo Service Area from the Shikoku side, please enter from Imabari IC and come to Kurushima Kaikyo Service Area. Kurushima Kaikyo Service Area is a service area shared by both directions. If you use Imabari-kita IC from a general road, you cannot stop at Kurushima Kaikyo Service Area, so please be careful.”

Another page that introduces the logo object at Kurushima Kaikyo Service Area has the same note.

Translation: “To get to Kurushima Kaikyo SA (3-9-68 Ohama-cho, Imabari, Ehime), please come by car from any IC on the Nishiseto Expressway. (From the Honshu side) about 54 km from Nishiseto Onomichi IC. (From the Shikoku side) about 5 km from Imabari IC. *If you enter the Nishiseto Expressway from Imabari-kita IC, you cannot get to Kurushima Kaikyo SA, so please be careful.”

On the Matsuyama Expressway, Nakayama Smart IC is the one smart IC with a direction limit

In the table “List of smart ICs directly connected to the expressway main line (NEXCO West)” (高速道路本線への直結型スマートIC実施箇所一覧(NEXCO西日本)) by West Nippon Expressway Company (NEXCO West), there is a row for Nakayama Smart IC (Iyo), between Iyo and Uchiko-Ikazaki on the Matsuyama Expressway. Its hours are all day, the vehicle types are all vehicles, and the usable directions column has the following 2 lines.

Translation: “Entrance toward Matsuyama. Exit from the Matsuyama direction only.”

In the row just above it in the same table, the usable directions for Toon Smart IC (Matsuyama Expressway, between Kawauchi and Matsuyama) are “full directions” (フル方向). Among the Matsuyama Expressway smart ICs in Ehime Prefecture on this list, Nakayama Smart IC was the only one with a limit on usable directions written.

Omishima IC and Hakatajima IC had no note about a limit

Among the individual IC pages of JB Honshi, the pages for Omishima IC (大三島IC) and Hakatajima IC (伯方島IC) had no note about the direction of travel. This does not mean they say there is no limit. It means there is no statement about a limit.

The latitude and longitude of the points are from OpenStreetMap (Overpass API) junction data, collected on October 11, 2026. The wording on official pages can change. The Kurushima Kaikyo SA section on the Imabari-kita IC page had changed from the wording we saw on September 16, 2026. This article quotes the wording we saw on October 11, 2026.
