The destination is a shrine on Omishima, at the center of the Shimanami Kaido

Oyamazumi Shrine (大山祇神社) is on Omishima in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture. The shrine’s official site calls Omishima “the center of the Shimanami Kaido, the largest island in the Geiyo Islands.” This article describes the way for a person who rents a car at Matsuyama Airport, enters the Nishiseto Expressway (Shimanami Kaido) at Imabari-kita IC, crosses three bridges, leaves at Omishima IC, and drives to the shrine.

The road from the airport to Imabari overlaps with the article on Matsuyama Airport to Itoyama Park. That article uses the Matsuyama Outer Ring Road and the Matsuyama Expressway, leaves at Imabari Yunoura IC, and drives on National Route 196. This article describes the part after that, inside the Shimanami Kaido.

The official Ehime guide says about 1 hour 50 minutes from the airport to Tatara Shimanami Park

The official Ehime tourism site, Iyokan Net (いよ観ネット), has a guide for going from Matsuyama Airport to the Shimanami Kaido by car. The destination is not the shrine. It is Michi-no-Eki Tatara Shimanami Park, right after you leave Omishima IC.

The local roads in this guide are Prefectural Roads 22 and 183, National Route 196, and National Route 317 after Omishima IC. The only expressway name is the Nishiseto Expressway. The starting point is Matsuyama Airport. The about 1 hour 15 minutes is the time to Imabari IC, and the about 30 minutes is the time from Imabari IC to Omishima IC.

The time to the shrine is written on other pages.

  • Imabari City’s tourism information gives about 10 minutes from Omishima IC to Oyamazumi Shrine.
  • The shrine’s official site writes “7 km from the Nishiseto Expressway (Shimanami Kaido) [Omishima IC].”
  • The model course of Iyokan Net writes “about 13 minutes by car” from Michi-no-Eki Tatara Shimanami Park to Oyamazumi Shrine.

These numbers have different starting points, so we have not added them up. We could not find an official travel time that covers the whole way from Matsuyama Airport to Oyamazumi Shrine.

Imabari IC and Imabari-kita IC, the difference in the entrance

The Ehime guide enters at Imabari IC. This article describes entering at Imabari-kita IC, but Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company writes that from either one you can only go toward Honshu. The text of the Imabari-kita IC page is as follows.

Translation: “From Imabari-kita IC, you cannot go to Imabari IC, Kurushima Kaikyo SA, or the Matsuyama Expressway (toward Matsuyama and Takamatsu). (To customers entering from Imabari-kita IC) If you use the Honshu-Shikoku road, you can only go toward Honshu. Please be careful.”

Translation: “If you go to Kurushima Kaikyo SA from the Shikoku side, please enter from Imabari IC and come to Kurushima Kaikyo SA. The Imabari IC page has a guide in the same direction.

Omishima is on the way toward Honshu, so this direction rule does not affect the route. But if you want to rest at Kurushima Kaikyo Service Area before crossing the islands, the rule is that you enter at Imabari IC, not Imabari-kita IC. Kurushima Kaikyo SA is also written about in the Itoyama Park article.

The difference in the distance and tolls from Imabari IC and Imabari-kita IC to Omishima IC is as follows, from the toll table and the section distance table of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company (standard car).

Imabari IC Imabari-kita IC
Section distance to Omishima IC 29.9km 24.7km
Cash car (non-ETC car) toll 2,830 yen 2,670 yen
ETC car toll (weekdays) 1,690 yen 1,540 yen
ETC car toll (holidays) 1,340 yen 1,290 yen

We could not find an official guide that describes the route on local roads between Imabari IC and Imabari-kita IC, or from which intersection you turn in to the entrance of Imabari-kita IC. In the map data, Prefectural Road 161 (Itoyama Park Line) passes just west of Imabari-kita IC. The position of the entrance should be checked on the guide signs on site.

The order of the bridges and islands

The “Bridges of the Shimanami Kaido” page of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company lists the bridges in order from the Honshu side. Going from the Imabari side, you cross them in the following order.

Order Bridge Bridge length Where you arrive IC you can leave at
1 Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge (3 suspension bridges: Third, Second, First) 1,570m, 1,515m, 960m Oshima Oshima-minami IC
2 Oshima Bridge (suspension bridge) 840m Mijikajima None
3 Hakata Bridge 325m Hakatajima Hakatajima IC
4 Omishima Bridge (arch bridge) 328m Omishima Omishima IC

About the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company writes the following.

Translation: “The Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge is the collective name of three suspension bridges, with a total length of 4.1 km, that span the Kurushima Strait of about 4 km between Oshima and Imabari.”

Source:

We also checked the order of the bridges in the map data. From the Imabari side, it is the Third Bridge, the Second Bridge, and the First Bridge.

Hakata Bridge and Oshima Bridge are together called the “Hakata-Oshima Bridges.”

Translation: “The Hakata-Oshima Bridges is the collective name of the Hakata Bridge between Hakatajima and Mijikajima and the Oshima Bridge between Mijikajima and Oshima.”

Source:

For the time of opening, the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge is given as May, Heisei 11 (1999), the Hakata-Oshima Bridges as January 1988, and the Omishima Bridge as May 1979. About the Omishima Bridge, Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company writes “本州四国連絡橋の海峡部に架けられた橋としては唯一のアーチ橋です。” (It is the only arch bridge among the bridges built over the straits of the Honshu-Shikoku bridges.)

There are two ICs where you can leave on Oshima. A car coming from the Imabari side leaves at Oshima-minami IC.

Oshima-kita IC works in the opposite direction.

A car going from the Imabari side to Omishima passes Oshima-minami IC, Oshima-kita IC, and Hakatajima IC, and goes on to Omishima IC. The pages of Omishima IC and Hakatajima IC have no note on the direction you can go. This does not mean they say there is no restriction. It means no note is posted.

From Imabari-kita IC to Omishima IC, the toll for a standard car is 1,290 to 2,670 yen

The toll table of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company divides the standard car tolls into three tables. The numbers from Imabari-kita IC to Omishima IC are read from the row for Imabari-kita and the column for Omishima in each table.

How you pay Title of the table Toll
Cash Standard car, cash car (non-ETC car) toll 2,670 yen
ETC (weekdays) Standard car, ETC car toll (weekdays) 1,540 yen
ETC (holidays) Standard car, ETC car toll (holidays) 1,290 yen

In the section distance table, Imabari-kita IC to Omishima IC is 24.7 km. Kei cars and similar, medium-sized vehicles, large vehicles, and extra-large vehicles are in separate tables.

There is a condition for the holiday toll. The toll table page of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company has the following note.

Translation: “* In fiscal year 2026, the holiday discount for standard cars, kei cars, and similar vehicles does not apply during Golden Week, Obon, Silver Week, the New Year holidays, and three-day weekends. If a standard car, kei car, or similar vehicle uses ETC, the ETC car toll (weekdays) applies.”

Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company tells the applicable days in its notice “Days when the holiday discount applies in fiscal year 2026.” Even if your departure day is a weekend or a public holiday, the weekday toll applies if it falls on a three-day weekend or similar.

On the Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays in October that are not marked as days of implementation, the restriction that continues from the previous day also lasts until 5:00 in the morning. In the figure of the notice, Kamiura Parking Area is also included in this section.

As the contact for the construction, the notice lists the Shimanami Imabari Management Center (0898-23-7250, 9:00 to 17:30, except Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays).

On October 25, Imabari IC to Innoshima-kita IC is closed for a cycling event

The section from Imabari-kita IC to Omishima IC is inside this closed section. The Q&A of the same page writes the following about the blocking of the entrances and about cars that were already on the expressway before the restriction.

Translation: “From 6:00, the entrance of each IC from Imabari IC to the Onomichi Ohashi entrance and exit will be blocked so that vehicles cannot enter. However, vehicles that passed the toll gate before 6:00 (vehicles driving on the main line) can drive as far as Imabari IC on the outbound line, and as far as the Onomichi Ohashi entrance and exit on the inbound line. (You do not necessarily have to leave at the nearest IC.)”

For people who come by car, there is a guide on detours and temporary ferries.

Translation: “If you use a vehicle, please use the detours (the Setonaka Expressway and the Kobe-Awaji-Naruto Expressway) or the temporary and regular ferries.”

In the course map of the event, the driving section of Course C is written as “Imabari IC - Omishima IC - Omishima loop - Hirokoji,” and Course F as “Imabari IC - Omishima IC - Hirokoji.” For restrictions on local roads, the event page shows maps for 11 places. They are around Imabari IC, around Kurushima Kaikyo SA, in front of Sunrise Itoyama, around Oshima BS, around Imabari Port, and so on. There was no map that shows local roads on Omishima. It is written that from 12:40, the whole section can be used as usual.

This restriction is only for October 25, 2026.

From Omishima IC to the shrine

When you leave at Omishima IC, Michi-no-Eki Imabari Tatara Shimanami Park (道の駅 今治市多々羅しまなみ公園) is very close. The roadside station information of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism introduces this roadside station like this.

Translation: “Michi-no-Eki Imabari Tatara Shimanami Park is right by the exit of Omishima IC,”

Source:

We could not find an official guide that describes the route to the shrine. The numbers are as follows.

  • The shrine’s official site: 7 km from Omishima IC
  • Imabari City’s tourism information: Omishima IC -> about 10 minutes -> destination
  • The model course of Iyokan Net: about 13 minutes by car from Michi-no-Eki Tatara Shimanami Park

When we tried a route search based on OpenStreetMap from Omishima IC to the shrine’s parking lot, the route went from National Route 317 to Prefectural Road 21 (Omishima-Kamiura Line), and the distance was about 7.9 km. This is different from the official 7 km. A route search is not an official guide, so the signs on site come first.

As a place to rest, the guide of JB Highway Service has Kamiura Parking Area. It writes “上浦PAは、下り線のみにあって、自動販売機コーナーを設置しています。” (Kamiura PA is only on the outbound line and has a vending machine corner.), and the parking capacity is 11 small cars. The event page writes “the outbound line can be driven as far as Imabari IC,” so outbound means the line going toward Imabari. Reading the two together, it seems that the line going from Imabari toward Onomichi does not have Kamiura PA, but we could not confirm the definition of inbound and outbound on the pages of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company.

There are four parking lots. The shrine’s lot beside the torii gate has 13 spaces

The official site of Oyamazumi Shrine describes parking as follows.

Translation: “By car. 7 km from the Nishiseto Expressway (Shimanami Kaido) [Omishima IC]. * Parking: 13 cars can park beside the torii gate. In addition, the parking lot of Omishima Fuji Park and others can be used.”

Source:

The parking lots near the shrine are lined up below by source. When the number differs by source, both are written.

Parking lot Number of spaces Fee Source
Beside the torii gate of the shrine 13 Not written on the shrine’s official site The shrine’s official site, Imabari City
Omishima Fuji Park city parking lot 50 Free Imabari City (shrine page and Fuji Park page)

Michi-no-Eki Imabari Tatara Shimanami Park 298 standard cars, 16 large vehicles Not written Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism

The shrine page of Iyokan Net writes the parking as “Yes (nearby facility) 50 spaces” and the parking fee as “Free.” It says “nearby facility,” and the number is different from the 13 spaces beside the torii gate.

What to check before you leave

  • Expressway closures: As of 0:37 on October 13, 2026, the closure information of Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Expressway Company showed “通行止めはありません。” (There are no closures.) for four-wheeled vehicles on the Nishiseto Expressway. Check again on the day you leave.
  • Strong wind: The same page says “本四高速道路は、風速によって、四輪車が通行止めにならなくても、二輪車は通行止めになることがあります。” (Depending on the wind speed, the Honshu-Shikoku Expressway may close to two-wheeled vehicles even when it is not closed to four-wheeled vehicles.)
  • Opening of the Imabari Asakura IC to Imabari Yunoura IC section: As of October 13, 2026, the page of the Matsuyama River and National Highway Office still shows “令和8年度 開通予定” (scheduled to open in fiscal year Reiwa 8). When it opens, the route from the airport to Imabari will change.
  • Bicycles: Where bicycles ride on the Shimanami Kaido, and the rules for passing bicycles by car, are collected in another article.
  • Construction and restrictions on local roads: National, prefectural, and city roads publish information differently depending on who manages them. Where to check is collected in this article.

What we could not confirm

  • An official page with the car travel time for the whole way from Matsuyama Airport to Oyamazumi Shrine
  • The route on local roads between Imabari IC and Imabari-kita IC, and the position of the entrance to Imabari-kita IC
  • An official guide on the route from Omishima IC to the shrine (the shrine’s official site goes only as far as “7 km,” and Imabari City “about 10 minutes”)
  • The fee of the parking lot beside the shrine’s torii gate
  • Construction and closures on local roads on Omishima (we did not check the restriction information for national, prefectural, and city roads)
  • The time of day on October 25, 2026, when bicycles ride on the local roads of Omishima during the event

What comes next for this article

The latitude and longitude of the points, and the positions of the bridges and ICs, were checked with OpenStreetMap map data. The point numbers will be the same as the chapter numbers of the driving video. This article was not made from a drive by the operator. It is put together from checking official pages. After we drive the route, we will add how the guide signs appear and where the parking lot entrances are.
